We decided to see Joshua Tree Park in two visits - the Colorado Desert was today - stopping at Cottonwood Oasis for a morning's hike.
The flowers, geology, reptiles and occasional bird kept us all busy with binoculars, cameras and phone apps. The flowers are blooming and the lizards are showing up. It is still relatively cool in Joshua Tree compared to the lower desert which works for hiking.
Our most thrilling sighting was a Western Chuckwalla - we found him up a rock face sunning. He was a long way away and better seen with binoculars. Explaining to others exactly where he was kept us all busy. Capturing him in a telephoto lens was challenging. We worked on capturing the perfect picture and identifying him for about an hour. Once home we were thrilled to see him on a screen rather than the window of the camera and confirmed our guess.
